What Do You Use?

The final project in one of my classes (yes, we're only half way through the semester, and I'm already being prompted to think about the final paper) needs to focus on a company that is specifically targeting me in their marketing outreach. I could be their focus because of demographics, behavior, psychographics--really anything.

So now I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out what product or service to write about, and I'm having a stupidly hard time deciding. Who do you think targets you? What brands do you find yourself returning to time and again?

Nuva Ring is the first ad that comes to mind that I know targets my demographic. It doesn't work though, I just mock it, since their ad campaign seems to be, "Girls, isn't it so hard to take a tiny pill every day? Here, have a Nuva Ring instead."

I actually thought about that type of product but then decided I wasn't comfortable telling my prof all about my birth control choices (part of the paper is to disclose if you're a user or not, loyal or not, etc.). What else do you have?

I would think anti-aging beauty products target my demographic. I usually pay attention to those commercials and then I freak out that I'm getting old.

I forgot to mention that Oil of Olay (P&G) is the brand that suckers me in every time.

I kind of want to write about Burt's Bees (my lips are slathered in their lip balm right now), but despite liking it, I don't actually think I'm their target audience.

We discussed a case study about Dove last night, so the beauty/anti-aging industry is top of mind just like you said, Rena. I'm disappointed to think that the only people interested in me are poeple who think I'm getting too old and too fat (lean cuisine and the like seem to target 30-something women, too). What a sad fact!

I would think all the electronics and household items are targeting us as well. We need to watch our weight, take care of our wrinkles and do laundry more efficiently!

And clean the house! And bake! I forgot what rich lives marketers think we have.

I'm exhausted just thinking about it!

I feel targeted by Weight Watchers all the time. I'm sure it's just because I feel massively overweight, but it seems like they are always advertising and telling me how much I need to lose weight.
Granted, I ignore them, turn off the t.v., eat some Jell-o (100 calories!) pudding, slather on some Oil of Olay lotion and clean the kitchen with my Clorox anti-bacterial wipes... Succumb to advertising much Dorrie?

The other one that I've been noticing a HUGE amount over here recently is toothpaste adverts. Seems like they're finally twigging to the Brits have bad teeth problem, and trying to sell them ever more complex solutions from laser whitening to strips, to toothpastes to combat the latest scurge - acid erosion.

All that OJ is finally ringing the death knoll for the chompers, apparently. The amount of money spent on advertising that I'm supposed to have gleaming white teeth and perfect breath every single second is enormous.

Of course, as I'm all wrinkly-faced and bacteria-infested, it's saying something that I would even feel compelled to smile! hahaah.

Toothpaste could be a good one. All those Crest White Strips seem to have smiling young women in them...I am also thinking of all those low fat yogurts, too...

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I'll let you know what I decide on.
