One of the Bummers of Winter

Ok, other office drones, I need to know: what do you do for lunch in the winter? During the spring, summer, and fall I love to take a few minutes to myself and grab a bench for 20 minutes or half an hour to read during the day. It gives me a break from staring at the computer and builds a little more reading time into my schedule (I’ll admit that I didn’t do this much this year, as I was compulsively reading The Huffington Post during every lunch).

Now that it’s finally cold, though, sitting outside is not an option. I find myself post election—right when I’m ready to hunker down with a book instead of reading the latest polls—with no where to take such a break. Am I doomed until spring thaw, or do some of you have suggestions?

a walk in the park. I do them sometimes - not as much as I mean to or want to. And with a hat and gloves, it's a nice break you can take on all but the coldest of days, since it warms you up.

A couple of weeks ago, though, I went into a nearby shop that I had zero (nada) intention of buying anything from at all, and spent a solid 30 min just looking at all the lovely, overpriced things I would never shell out for.

And . . . I want to get up the guts to actually quiz the surly Italians one day. that's a one shot deal, but you get the idea. I think there's a lot in our nabe that we don't see and I have the vague goal of getting to know it a little better.

I have been known to roost in the reception area somewhere far from where I actually work. That way people smile at me like I'm waiting for someone, and I can read peacefully. I also try to do several series of the stairs when it's winter, just to get my heart rate up so I don't feel comatose. Although, now I'm in 2 floor building, it lacks something, ya know? :) iPod = necessity.
