Matt Groening, Seer?

How many of you already saw this clip of Homer Simpson trying to vote for Obama? Pretty funny when the machine switches his vote from Obama to McCain, right?

Yeah, I'm not laughing any more now that this basic scenario (minus the diebold-inflicted beating) is actually being reported in West Virginia. And I'm also not surprised that it's happening in a state McCain is terrified of losing.

I really don't understand why, if in all my years of using ATMs I've only ever experienced one error (in my favor), Diebold et al can't make electronic voting machines that print anonymous receipts for electronic balloting. You know, like a transaction # that isn't tied to your identity but is tied to the precinct you're in. ALso, if an electronic machine takes seconds to record a choice, that seems ridiculous - it takes an instant for my pin number to register so why does it have to take seconds (very long in electronic device time) for voters' choices to appear. This whole thing smells.
Also, gotta love the election officials attitudes. Instead of expressing genuine concern, they retort not that the machines have problems but that it's the fault of voters and the media telling bad stories. Voters have the right to expect near perfection in balloting because it's such a fundamental choice.

Okay, sorry for the rant. But really. I fear that Nov. 5 we'll be watching lawyers file briefs all over the country.

You're so right about the way election officials have responded. NPR also touched on this this morning and confirmed that officials were blaming user error. And they noted that most of the people reporting problems were pretty old, suggesting that anyone beyond retirement age can't use anything electronic.

Between this and all the talk of the Bradley effect, I'm worried.
