Congratulations to Barack Obama for securing the nomination! I think Hillary Clinton deserves a lot of kudos for coming as far as she did, though I think it's definitely time for her to accept defeat gracefully. Now on to the speculation about who will be tapped as veep. Todd and I have a bet about Hillary's chances (he thinks she has one, I don't), and I keep hearing a lot about Sam Nunn (former senator from Georgia) and Kathleen Sebelius (governor of Kansas). I don't know much about either one of them, so it's time to do some research.

Yeah!! I'm with Todd on the Hillary nod. I hope she gets it. I think the combined ticket would be (a) unstoppable (b) a turning point in American politics - a woman and an African American. I hope she gets the nod... and they can get along if she does! :)
Obviously, I'm for Hillary as VP. I've heard a lot about Sebelius, too, but what a slap in the face if he chose a woman other than Clinton.
I disagree. Not only do I think he'll not pick Hillary, I think choosing her would be a terrible idea. I believe he can win without her, and she doesn't bring the long standing experience and foreign relations or military experience that will balance his ticket. She's also not from the south, which is an area dems historically need help winning.
Not to mention the fact that I don't imagine them working well together; One of the strengths of her candidacy was her intense will to win; I can't imagine her settling into the no. 2 spot happily.
And I have a whole theory about how Bill couldn't stand playing second fiddle to his history-making wife and secretly sabotaged her. The idea of him playing third fiddle to history-making Obama and history-making Hillary will drive him over the edge. He'll start putting arsenic in their morning coffees.
In the end, I think Obama will go for a white dude to placate all the people who think that an Africa American and a woman are too much change for America all at once. For the record, I think that's BS.
I think he has to bring the south, and HRC can't deliver that. Slap in the face or not, I think it would definitely cost the Dems the election if she goes on the ticket - not because she may not have her own strengths, but because of the balanced ticket issue. Obama-Clinton ( or, in another parallel universe, Clinton-Obama) would be way too northern liberal to attract the places the Dems need to carry in the fall.
I agree that(a) HRC won't be on the ticket for all the reasons you describe and (b) the pick will have to balance the ticket.
People like Nunn for the South thing and the foreign experience. I think Sebelius would be a good choice.
I'm also thinking that Richardson would have a strong chance. He endorsed Obama early, and he's got foreign experience.
Also, look at Mark Warner for Virginia. (Obama has more chance in Virginia than W. Virginia.)
I think there might be some Ohioans that he's looking at.
