What do you all think about walking a cat outdoors? Todd is quite taken with the idea of us putting Camilla on a leash and showing her that there is a whole wide world outside of my little apartment. I'm pretty convinced that it's a bad idea. I believe that Camilla is happy in her small, contained little world, and I think she'd freak out if I put her on a leash and took her to the park.
I think that it would go something like this, at the very best.
What do you guys think? Should I give it a try?

Well, the video actually went much better than the time I attempted to take Possum for a walk. We never even got to the leash part of the exercise! Beside which the fact of Camilla going outside will expose her to things and make it necessary to take her to the vet more often. . . . or just "to the vet" if you're like me!
I had no idea you tried to take Possum for a walk. I want to hear this story!
I've been debating the same thing (taking Oliver to Fort Greene Park on a leash-harness-thingy). If you try this, let me know!
Oh, no--not poor Camilla! I think this would be traumatizing for any cat, but Camilla seems particularly fond of the indoors. And I would worry about her eyes...
But then again, I treat Mugsy like he's some sort of invalid newborn, carrying him everywhere he should really be walking, so my judgment can't be trusted.
I've never had any success getting a cat into a collar or harness. I'm impressed that the cat in the video just backed up and didn't roll on the floor screaming like mine did. And if you take her to the park there's the added bonus of her eating grass and then throwing it up in your apartment...
There is a woman in my neighborhood that takes her cat out in a stroller. The stroller is designed for a cat with a mesh compartment, where it sits. There's no kid, just the cat. It's a little strange...
I applaud your forward thinking in the cat arena, but I tend to agree with you that Camilla seems nice and content in her loft Manhattan home, and a walk would introduce a whole host of things to the mix that I'm not sure either of you would benefit from.
And the thought of putting a harness on Cleo makes me cringe (well, the memory of having Cleo, anyway). I'm not sure I'd ever recover from the scratches.
On balance, I say if the harnessing thing goes like a dream, give it a try. If it doesn't, don't push the issue.
No way! I think that video is absolute best-case scenario for the average cat. not that Camilla is average is most ways — certainly not in the cute department — but there is no effing way.
If I lived farther from a crazy intersection, and lived in a smaller building, I'd be way more inclined to let Lenny outside. But a leash is the opposite of outdoor freedom for a cat.
